New Delhi: India’s cricket selectors yesterday dropped opening batsman Virender Sehwag from the 15-member squad for the first three One-Day Internationals (ODI) of the five-match series against England starting on January 11.
The out-of-form Sehwag was replaced by Cheteshwar Pujara -- who stands to make his debut -- but surprisingly Rohit Sharma managed to retain his place in the team.Sehwag was also dropped from the third and final ODI against Pakistan here yesterday.
Two selectors, Vikram Rathour and Saba Karim, were seen having a chat with Sehwag on the eve of the match here on Saturday.
The Sandip Patil-led selection committee met here Sunday and announced the team immediately after the ODI that India won in a thrilling fashion by 10 runs.
Pacers Shami Ahmed, who made a good debut here finishing with figures 1/23, and the impressive Bhuvneshwar Kumar also found a place in the side. The five-match ODI series will be played at Rajkot (Jan 11), Kochi (Jan 15), Ranchi (Jan 19), Mohali (Jan 23) and Dharamsala (Jan 27).
Meanwhile, India struggling to cope with the new changes in rules for One-Day Internationals (ODI), International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive officer (CEO) Dave Richardson said it would take at least a year for the teams to get accustomed to the changes.
India has failed to utilise the two bouncers per over rule in the ongoing series against Pakistan, who have taken the rule change like fish to water.
“It is far too early to pass judgement whether it will be successful or not,” Richardson told reporters here at the Ferozeshah Kotla.
