DOHA: The Public Cleaning Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has set up special teams to remove waste during Eid Al-Adha holidays.
The teams were formed anticipating an increase in waste, which will require double efforts to be removed.
Safar Mubarak Al-Shafi, Director of the department, said, “Cleaning work will continue 24 hours during Eid days and cover all locations across Qatar.
“It will also focus on tourist spots like the Corniche, parks and public beaches, in addition to the central market and automated abattoir, which requires more garbage containers.”
Al-Shafi said cleaning will be done according to a prepared plan and programmes. The department is taking into account workers’ rights to perform their rituals, so work during Eid Al-Adha prayer will be stopped.
“There are emergency teams with equipment to deal with cases such as waste not properly disposed in designated places; remains of animals slaughtered outside abattoirs and left in open places and emitting bad odour, and temporary closure of some streets which may prevent the department’s vehicles from reaching garbage containers,” Al-Shafi added.
“The department is giving special priority to Eid prayer grounds to provide required cleaning services, in collaboration with authorities concerned.
“The amount of waste increases during Eid days due to people’s requirements and the number of sacrificial animals, some of which are slaughtered outside abattoirs and their waste is thrown in garbage containers and in open places,” he said.
Al-Shafi urged people to maintain cleanliness, not to throw waste in public places and not to leave plastic bags and boxes on the beaches.
