DOHA: Around 600 Karwa school bus drivers and supervisors are attending awareness lectures on traffic rules, organised by the General Directorate of Traffic at the Ministry of Interior.
The three-day lectures in Arabic, English and Urdu started on Sunday, with the participation of about 200 drives and conclude today, said Major Jaber Mohamed Rashid Odaiba, Assistant Director, Media and Traffic Awareness Department.
Under the theme ‘Raising awareness among school bus drivers and supervisors’, the lectures aim at promoting the traffic culture level among drivers and reducing accidents and violations, especially sudden parking and not leaving enough distance from other vehicles, said Lieutenant Fahd Mobarek Al Abdallah.
“We have informed them to check the tyres and lights before they start duty,” he added.
“The lectures have come at a time when students are preparing to return to school on September 18 after summer vacation.
“We are showing the drivers mistakes they committed last year so that they can avoid them, and have warned them that they will be punished if they commit them again,” said Major Odaiba. “We have received complaints from people that drivers are not committed to safety and security during the school year,” he added.
Common mistakes include drivers being in a hurry and not parking near students’ homes, leaving them cross the road, as well as overspeeding.
First Lieutenant Abdul Wahid Ghraib Al Unaizi said, “We have updated school bus supervisors on how to let students get into the bus and disembark. We have also told them not to talk to drivers during the drive and how to solve disputes among students.”
The lectures are being conducted in collaboration with Mowasalat.
