Students of Gulf English School got into the spirit of Qatar National Sport Day with a week-long series of competitions to pit their sporting prowess against their peers and to understand the importance of having a healthy and active lifestyle.
With an emphasis on sports for fun and everyone having a go, regardless of ability, GES organised four sports days. The dedicated Infants day was held at the school in Gharaffa, while events for primary and secondary school pupils took place at Al Gharaffa Sports Club.
More than 350 primary school students from Year 3 to Year 6 competed to win a number of track and field events, cheered on by their parents and friends. Senior school girls showed great sportsmanship and comradeship during their sports day, which featured traditional track and field events such as a 60m dash, a 400m run, 60m hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot putt and javelin throw.
The secondary school boys’ sports day featured track and field events including hurdles, a relay race, shot putt, javelin throw, long jump and high jump and was one of the school’s most successful sports days. Chijiunda Omah emerged the star of the day, finishing unbeaten in all his track events.
The winners of all the events will be announced in a dedicated assembly and medal ceremony at the school on Monday.
Praising the students for their commitment, PE teacher Matthew Uffindal said: “These sports days were some of the best we have organised at Gulf English School. The pupils showed drive and determination to do their best, with many of them really raising the standard of their performance. Lots of the students gave new sports a go and did well, which boosted their confidence and self-esteem.
“The focus of these sports days was on participation and sport-for-fun – understanding the benefits of healthy, active living and hopefully encouraging many more students to build sport into their daily lives.”
