New York: Qatar has reiterated its commitment to continue its efforts to promote and protect human rights and cooperate with international organizations and relevant U.N. bodies in line with the international standards, particularly the Human Rights Council and its entities and mechanisms.
HE Ambassador Sheikha Aliaa Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks as she addressed the 71st U.N. General Assembly on the report of the Human Rights Council.
The Qatari diplomat said Qatar has worked in the regional and international frameworks to achieve U.N. goals through its efforts in peaceful settlement of conflicts and building institutions based on the rule of law so as to create peaceful communities capable of development and enhancing human rights in line with the sixth goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Sheikha Aliaa said that Qatar has paid special attention to education, presenting different initiatives to enforce the eight to education and offer aid to concerned countries, especially in emergency situations.
At the national level, she said, Qatar continues to pay close attention to the promotion and protection of human rights that were included in the country's constitution as well as including them in the efforts to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 that stipulate the integration of human rights in curriculum, enhancing human rights for women, children and people with disabilities, combating human trafficking, promoting healthcare and education, and securing a decent life for expatriate workers.
The Qatari ambassador said the Human Rights Council report reflects the enormity of flagrant human rights violations committed against the Palestinian and Syrian peoples and calls for effective and urgent action from the international community that is commensurate with the seriousness of the situation facing civilians who lack the minimum of their basic rights.
Sheikha Aliaa Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani said Qatar continues to exert its maxiumum efforts within the international group to address these serious crises in order to achieve peace in the region and the world by implementing U.N. resolutions, including those of the Human Rights Council.
Qatar's statement praised the effective role of the Human Rights Council in providing technical aid and capacity building for states so as to fulfill their commitments in the protection and promotion of human rights.
In fulfilling the role of Human Rights Council in this regard, the ambassador said, the efforts of the Doha-based U.N. Human Rights Training and Documentation Center for South-West Asia and the Arab Region, are commendable as the center helps in building capacities in the human rights field at the regional level and has become a source of expertise in training and a reference for researchers and civil society groups concerned with human rights.
