90 shipments of tainted vegetables destroyed

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment inspected in October a total of 6139 shipments of different types of imported agricultural products.  The total weight of the shipments checked at different check oints of the country reached 70478.182 tonnes including vegetables, fruits and other agricultural products.
The Agriculture Quarantine Office at the Ministry said the monitoring process at different entry check points resulted in destruction of 90 shipments at a weight of 231.90 tonnes which were found infected with pests and were destroyed for violating the law of agricultural quarantine rules.
The Ministry’s inspectors also checked four different types of agricultural shipments with a weight of 65 tonnes on their way to export, in addition to issuance of health certificates and clearances for export and re-export of agricultural products.
In statement, the Ministry emphasised that agriculture quarantine is the first line of defence in the country to protect plants from pests, adding that it is a precautionary measure taken by the Ministry to protect plants and agriculture products.
Meanwhile, the awareness team at the Department of General Cleaning received last week 24 students from Al Markhyah Primary Independent School for Girls and 18 students from Al Shurooq Boys School to participated in a recycling workshop.
The training workshop included practical activities on how to reuse waste and create useful materials using plastic bottles, clothes and woods.
