DOHA: Oryx GTL held a spectacular event for all its employees and contractors at Qatar National Convention Centre to celebrate achieving a Zero Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) for two consecutive years.

With the realisation of this new benchmark, Oryx GTL - a pioneering gas-to-liquids fuel company - confirms its leading position as one of the world’s safest energy companies committed to safety, high sustainability standards and environmental responsibility, a company press release said.

Speaking on the occasion, H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, the Minister of Energy and Industry and Oryx GTL’s Chairman of Board of Directors, congratulated Oryx GTL for an outstanding world class achievement of approximately 16 million man-hours without a Lost Time Incident, and the completion of two years with a Total Recordable Incident of Zero.

Al Sada said: “Safety is a valuable attribute and a core constituent of our business.  It is also an organizational commitment that is aligned with the holistic vision pursued by the government under the wise leadership of the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.”

“It was under the guidance of His Highness that the National Development Strategy stipulated that Qatar workers should feel safe and secure while in the workplace and called for protecting employees from potential work-induced diseases, injury or death… and to better address the dangers associated with risky jobs.” Al Sada added.

In his speech, the Minister of Energy and Industry said “Qatar’s commitment to the environment, health and safety of our society is also captured within the Qatar National Vision 2030, which encourages responsible economic development in a manner that protects its natural environment for future generations.

Commenting on its ‘Beyond Zero Harm’ campaign, Oryx GTL CEO Abdulrahman Al Suwaidi said: “Having achieved the Zero Harm benchmark  more than once , ORYX GTL looks to go beyond that and to establish a culture of safety and security as an integral part of our way of life. This requires us to do our best to create such a culture in the minds of our employees, and to make them spread this culture outside work, in order to enjoy an accident-free society.”

Oryx GTL invests extensive hours in training, coaching and working with both employees and contractors to ensure safer working practices and working environments to help embed its safety culture and philosophy, which states that “Safety is our way of life”.

This is part of an organisation-wide, zero-compromise approach to safety. The Road to Zero Harm is a formal system integrated into every aspect of the business, helping define and use best practices to manage safety and health issues.

Lean Strauss, Board Director, said: “We are proud of the remarkable production achievements and safety record of our joint venture Oryx GTL, a world class company, which serves as a model for modern GTL projects around the world. The future looks bright.”

Oryx GTL values incorporate Sustainable Development, a concept that is based on a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement in a zero harm manner.  The Zero TRIR celebration featured several brain-storming contests on health and safety matters where winners were honored with valuable awards.
