Baghdad: The World Bank announced today its approval of a USD 900 million project to improve road infrastructure in Iraq.
In a statement, the World Bank said the project will support Iraq's economic transport corridors, which are a cornerstone of domestic transport, regional integration, and long-term economic growth. It will also enhance the safety and reliability of transport and open new opportunities for individuals and businesses throughout the country.
The statement added that road transport accounts for more than 90 percent of Iraq's total transport volume. However, most of the country's road networks suffer from weak infrastructure and deterioration caused by climatic pressures, in addition to road safety hazards. It noted that while most roads are paved, a significant percentage are in poor condition, hindering trade, access to services, and economic opportunities.
The statement explained that this sector is a vital source of employment, as road construction and rehabilitation contribute to job creation and support broader economic activity.
The statement emphasized that approximately 7.9 million citizens are expected to benefit from the project, noting that it will benefit various regions of Iraq, from Baghdad to the Kurdistan Region and along the border corridors with Jordan, Syria, and Turkiye.
It pointed out that by improving connectivity between major population centers, industrial and agricultural areas, and other sectors, the project is expected to reduce travel times and transport costs, increase freight efficiency, alleviate congestion on secondary and urban roads, support economic diversification, and facilitate access to vital sectors such as Tourism, agriculture, health, and manufacturing.
