Wallet Out of Watermelon Rind and Flood Alarm were some of the interesting creations of high school students of Philippine School Doha at the annual PSD Science Congress, which concluded on Sunday.

Around 30 experimental research projects were presented at the fair, which was a product of collaborative work among the students from conceptualisation to implementation.

“Innovation is something intrinsic to eminent scientists and researchers. It is not a difficult attribute to have. Innovation is simply doing things enhanced, making things better,” said Alexander S Acosta, school principal.

With the theme “Research Innovation towards Global Competence”, the science fair was the product of the efforts of science teachers of PSD.

Addressing the event, Aliyah Albasti, Curriculum Coordinator of the Supreme Education Council, lauded the activity as a great initiative that would promote science and technology.

Dr Asmaa Muftah Al Muhannadi, head of Scientific Research Curriculum Students Office, stressed the advances being made in science amid challenges facing the world such as climate change, dwindling fresh water supply, non-renewable energy sources, and inadequate environmental protection.

Four outstanding projects were recognised during the event, including Flood Alarm of IV-Beryl, Wallet out of Watermelon Rind of III-Amethyst, Malunggay Ink of II-Amber and Briquette Paper as Fuel of I-Jade.

Keith Cyrielle Bacsa from III-Amethyst expressed her desire to leave her mark on the Philippine leather and garment industry. Having developed an eco-friendly and economically competitive product made of watermelon rind, she hopes that it will soon realise her vision of establishing watermelon rind as a viable alternative to synthetic leather.
