Doha: The Agricultural Affairs Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment is organising a three-day Honey Festival from today at Al Mazroua farm.
The statistics issued by the Ministry reveal a significant increase in local production of vegetables in the last four seasons. 4785 tonnes of vegetables were sold in 2015/2016, 3618 tonnes in 2014/15, 1982 tonnes in 2013/14 and 884 tonnes in 2012/13 at the winter vegetable markets in Al Mazroua, Al Khor-Dakhira and Al Wakrah.
The aim of establishing the vegetables markets is to support Qatari farms. New markets will join soon the current markets like new ones in Muaither and AL Ruwais, the ministry said. These markets offer a variety of vegetable and poultry products from Qatari farms at attractive prices. The prices are less compared to the central fruit and vegetable market.
On the other hand, these markets provide an opportunity to farmers to sell their products directly to the customers without intervention of the middlemen. The Agricultural Affairs Department's inspectors maintain vigilance over prices in the farm markets and quality of products to make sure that they have been brought from the farms directly.
