Doha Players to stage pantomime Space Wars

Doha Players will stage its 38th annual pantomime, ‘Space Wars’, from today until Saturday at the Qatar National Theatre.

‘Space Wars’ tells the story of a young boy named Mark Sleepwalker, who dreamed of going off on adventures. Mark’s chance to prove himself has finally arrived, assuming his mother doesn’t get in the way. In love with the beautiful princess Ha-el, Mark is off on a journey to retrieve the legendary helmet of the Lone Spaceman. Unfortunately, the evil Queen Livia, her bratty son Ben, and her android clone of Princess Ha-el intend to make sure that Mark never returns from his quest. Martians, robots, and cream pies abound and the only way Mark can survive is if he learns to “use the Farce!”

Kelly Mordecai plays the role of Mark Sleepwalker with Penny Ramsey as Princess Ha-el. A music and drama teacher at Dukhan English School, Kelly played Aladdin as her first role in a panto with Doha Players two years ago. Like Kelly, this is Penny’s second panto with Doha Players, the first one having been Aladdin.

“This pantomime started as soon as we finished the last one.. The theme and setting is in ‘Pantomime Space’ but the story is in the great tradition of pantomime,” said Peter Phillips, Chairman.

Space Wars is directed by Celia Scott, choreographed by Lindsay Latimer with Steve Rich as musical director.

“Space Wars is a traditional panto story told through the concept of space characters and is sure to be a show the whole family will enjoy. It will have the usual opportunities for the audience to join in with booing, cheering and singing along!  As it’s a full-length show, it may not be suitable for very young children,” said a spokesperson.

The main sponsor is ConocoPhillips, while the platinum sponsors are GAC, Doha Mums and THE One.

The show dates are December 5 (7pm), 6 (7pm), 7 (3.30pm and 7.30pm) and 8 (3.30pm).

The tickets are priced at QR75 each and are on sale at THE One in Landmark and Villaggio.
