DOHA: The Central Municipal Council (CMC) said yesterday that all municipalities must have vehicles and necessary equipment to drain out logged rainwater from roads, open grounds and other public places.
The CMC said in its recommendations forwarded to the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning that the municipalities must respond quickly in emergency cases, especially if highways and main roads are logged with rainwater.
The rainwater drainage vehicles must be equipped with alarms, safety and security systems and sirens to reach destinations on time.
The CMC said during rains, the drainage vehicles must be deployed temporarily in certain areas that are off highways and main roads.
The municipalities also need to coordinate with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) to implement short-term solutions for draining rainwater, and establish task forces for quick response in alarming situations, according to the recommendations.
The CMC has also urged Ashghal to strictly monitor and intensify inspection of road maintenance works and maintenance of sewage networks to make sure all channels are passable and open. Sandy areas and pumping points also need to be under constant monitoring; tunnels and bridges should be given high priority, said one recommendation, stressing the importance of coordination with the Ministry of Environment, Kahramaa and Ooreedoo to speed up completion of infrastructure projects.
The recommendations were presented by the Service and Facilities Committee during the fifth session of the council yesterday. Draining out rainwater from highways and maintenance of rainwater draining networks was a proposal presented by Councillor Hamad bin Lahdan Al Muhannadi, who represents constituency 26. CMC members also discussed a proposal about public bus stations and their locations. The proposal said majority of Karwa bus stations lack safety and security requirements because the stations do not have enough space for commuters’ drop-off and boarding. Passengers also suffer in the summer season due to high heat and humidity while waiting in open bus stations.
After discussion, members agreed to refer the proposal to the committee and invite a representative for further discussions.
A proposal about building big public parks between Al Khor City and Al Thakeera was referred to the committee for further discussions with the concerned municipalities before forwarding it as a recommendation.
