Doha, Qatar: Al Wakrah are eyeing a strong comeback in the upcoming Qatar Stars League (QSL) season, with new coach Vicente Moreno driving a renewed “winning mentality” within the squad.
After three consecutive top-four finishes, the Blue Wave stumbled to eighth place in the 2024-2025 QSL season. Determined to bounce back, the club held a pre-season camp in Estepona, Spain, featuring a series of friendlies to fine-tune preparations. They played a 3-3 draw against Europa FC in their last game in Spain yesterday.
Moreno, who replaced Poya Asbaghi, believes the team’s attitude bodes well for the campaign ahead.

“The most positive thing I’ve seen is everyone’s commitment and willingness to work. That makes my job easier,” said the 50-year-old Spaniard in his first club interview since signing a two-year deal.
“When players are eager to implement what you ask of them, sessions become smooth and productive. The squad has quality, and we can help develop their performance through tactical reinforcement. Overall, I see a high level.”
But Moreno’s focus is clear: results.
“Professional football is about winning, and not just playing. Our goal is to play in a way that maximises our chances of winning. That’s what we’re working toward.”
Alongside a change in leadership, Al Wakrah made several key signings. New arrivals include Fahad Waad, Moroccan forward Amine Zouhzouh, Brazilian defender Lucas Verissimo, and striker Raul de Tomas, on loan from La Liga’s Rayo Vallecano.
Mohammed Ayash also joined from Al Duhail, while Qatari international Assim Madibo became the latest addition, arriving on loan from the same club.
“Coming back to Al Wakrah, the place where I started my career, the place that has given me a lot, is a feeling I cannot describe honestly,” Madibo said in a club video yesterday.
“The ambition is great honestly. I hope we end this season with a trophy. We hope to make it far in the league, and challenge for all the competitions hopefully.”
Al Wakrah open their QSL campaign against Al Arabi on August 15 at Al Thumama Stadium.
