Doha: The Board of International Public Relations Associations has decided to hold the annual IPRA Golden World Awards in Doha — for the first time outside Europe.
The decision was taken at a meeting in Brussels, chaired by IPRA Secretary-General Philip Sheppard and attended by Jassim Fakhroo, board member and representative of East Asia, and IPRA President Bart de Vries.
Fakhroo said the board approved the holding of its next meeting in Doha — the first in the Middle East — to mark its presence in the Middle East. De Vries reviewed a report on his visit to Doha in May where he met senior officials of Qatar University (QU), Katara Hospitality and Qatar Centre for Voluntary Activities and discussed cooperation.
Fakhroo said the board discussed action plans of GCC and Middle East countries, where the public relations sector is witnessing high growth and activities to support it.
The board agreed to renew a contract regarding the GCC branch. He said the board also decided to cooperate with QU and the centre to spread the public relation culture. IPRA is expected to reveal details of events to be held in Doha during the awards next November.
The award were launched in 1990 to recognise PR programmers of world-class standards and their excellence
Fakhro said a jury of some 60 PR professionals from 40 countries shortlist the entries. The winners are selected based on merit, relevance, concrete objectives, creative strategies, tactics and demonstrable results. The competition includes local, national, regional and international individuals and agencies, through old or fresh programmes completed in the last 12 months.
