DOHA: Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) has raised over QR11m in a radio programme for Syrian people suffering in Aleppo due to intensified air raids by the regime’s military planes.
The donation campaign received about QR1m from one donor and unique generosity by an Indian expatriate worker who donated QR200 from his QR1,000 monthly earning.
The latest military operation that created severe humanitarian crisis in the city has prompted charity organisations in Qatar to launch massive donation drives to provide urgent relief to distressed Syrians. The donations will be used to set up field hospital, buy ambulances and distribute cooked food to beneficiaries.
The RAF campaign was part of ‘Abwab Al Rahma’ (Doors of Mercy) programme of Holy Quran Radio on Sunday evening.
The programmer received overwhelming response from philanthropists (companies and individuals) in Qatar.
Some donors contributed online at the RAF website during the programme, others pledged through SMS with personal details and amount. Many headed to donation booths set up by RAF across Qatar.
The highest donation was QR1m by a company, followed by QR500,000 by another donor. Donations between QR300,000 and QR200,000 were also received.
A child donated QR500.
“The donation by the Indian worker become a source of inspiration and encouragement for people and helped attract donations, so it was lauded during the program,” said a RAF official.
RAF began dispatching humanitarian aid to Aleppo from a special fund set up for Syrian people, in the beginning of the crisis.
