Nine Qatar University (QU) law students will compete alongside counterparts from Kabul University, University of Bahrain, Alexandria University, Iraqiya University College of Law, Kuwait International Law School, Dar Al Kehma University, and the Faculty of Legal, Political, and Social Sciences of Tunis in the five-day Annual Willem C. Vis Middle East International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot competition.
The event is organized by QU College of Law (LAWC), Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution, US Department of Commerce Commercial Law Development Program, and Center for International Legal Education (University of Pittsburgh).
The opening ceremony held on Sunday at QU was attended by LAWC Dean Dr Hassan Okour, Secretary General Qatar International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration Sheikh Thani bin Ali Al Thani, Cultural Attaché of US embassy to Qatar Kristen E Anstoos, and officials of the organizing institutions.
It is the 4th instalment of the competition that allows teams of students from Middle East law schools to present oral arguments in a fictitious international commercial arbitration.  The competition is one of many being held around the world from which winning teams will go on to compete in the final -- the 21st Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot -- which will be held in Vienna in April.
The students will attend training sessions over three days and present their arguments over the final two days.  Professors and deans of participating universities will serve as mentors and advisers, while practitioners from the local, regional and international legal community will attend as arbitrators, and provide the students with feedback to help them improve on their arguments for the final competition. The Peninsula
