Doha: The Scholarships and Partnerships Office at Qatar University yesterday held its fifth Annual Scholarship and Sponsorship Students’ Gathering.
The event aimed to highlight the current status and achievements of the office and showcase the number of past and current scholars who have studied or are studying or preparing to study at international universities.
QU President Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham welcomed the attendees who included ambassadors Adrian Norfolk (Canada), Dana Shell Smith (US) and Eric Chevallier (France).
Also attending were representatives of the Japanese and Italian embassies as well as the British Council, a number of scholars including those who recently graduated, several past graduates and those awaiting finalization of their arrangements to join universities abroad.
In his remarks, Dr Al Derham said: “It is a pleasure to welcome you to this annual event in which we honour the efforts of our scholarship and sponsorship students and to celebrate the ones who recently graduated.
“In this event, we share our pride in our students and their achievements. Today, we can see our contribution to Qatar’s bright future. The university continues in its role to provide the Qatari society with distinguished graduates who are effectively able to engage in the development process whether at QU or in the local labour market.
“Our students’ academic achievements will open the way for them to be the future leaders and today, we are so proud to see our students’ determination and persistence to take their place among the country’s leaders.
“They were provided with opportunities to study in the most prestigious international universities and they represented their alma mater in the best way possible.”
The recently-returned students included four PhD scholars — Hadeel Al Khatib (College of Education), Saad Al Sobhi (College of Engineering), Mohamad Al Safran (College of Arts and Sciences) and Reem Al Ansari (College of Law); seven MA scholars — Abdulla Al Mulla and Khaled Al Shammari (College of Law), Maryam Al Kuwari and Aisha Al Dosari (College of Arts & Sciences), Mohamad Al Sada and Faisal Al Jaber (College of Engineering) and Khaled Al Hashimi (College of Business & Economics) — all having successfully completed their studies at universities around the world such as Washington College of Law and Indiana University in the US, and School of Oriental and African Studies, Middlesex University, Imperial College London and University of Leeds in the UK, among others.
Last year, the office selected 24 students from various colleges and departments to pursue scholarships and sponsorships.
Currently, 95 students are being managed by the office — 62 scholarship students who are pursuing Masters and PhD programmes, four under sponsorship, and 29 preparing to leave for studies abroad. The Peninsula
