DOHA: In a unique move, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has launched a new service through SMS to provide meanings of the names of places, streets and cities in Qatar with details about the origin of their names.
The service in Arabic is named ‘Dlela’ and can be accessed by sending a text message with the name of the place or street concerned to 92192.
The ministry will respond with another text message with the required information, it said yesterday.
As information provided by the ministry through the new service, the place name ‘Lusail’ comes from a small village where a plant called ‘Alwasl’ grows.
So it was named ‘Al Wusail’ from which the name ‘Lusail’ originated.
The name ‘Um Salal Mohammad’ originated from a big meadow with big rocks called ‘Sulal’, and the name ‘Mohammad’ was added because Sheikh Mohammad bin Jassim used to visit the place.
‘Alwakra’ means the bird’ nest, and the place has been named so because birds used to make their nests in the area.
The name ‘Mesaieed’ originated from the name of the soil where a plant called ‘Alsaad’ used to grow.
As for ‘Ras Laffan’, the word ‘Laffan’ refers to ‘laff’ — a turn around.
The area is a high ground that is extended into the sea, and it is corrosive from down, and what is left from it forms a turned around head and that is where the meaning came from, according to the ministry.
The name ‘Al Khor’ has different meanings — the mouth of the water in the sea; a neck from the sea that goes into the land and the Gulf from the sea.
