DOHA: Humanitarian projects worth QR144m to support Syrian people were announced at the Syrian Humanitarian Crisis conference held here on Thursday.
The event, organised by Qatar Charity (QC), attracted more than 100 delegates from 50 government and non-governmental organisations.
Many participating organisations announced humanitarian and developmental projects for the displaced Syrians and refugees.
QC announced setting aside QR100m while Islamic Development Bank earmarked QR25.55m for implementation of educational projects.
The Istanbul-based Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief (IHH) announced health projects worth QR10.95m, while Islamic Dawah Organisation’s office in Qatar announced support for winter projects in Syria at a cost of QR3m. The World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) announced financial support to projects costing QR3.9m.
International Islamic Charity Organisation (IICO) in Kuwait, Silatech, and ROTA signed agreements with QC for implementing educational and economic reinforcement projects for the displaced Syrians and refugees. The International Medical Corps announced plans to implement medical and psychological projects without disclosing the cost.
The forum was held in preparation for the fourth conference of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) Donor to Syrian People in February 2016 in Britain.
In the concluding statement, the conference encouraged all humanitarian groups to use all possible means to reach solutions that would stop the Syrians’ sufferings. The conference recommended prioritising investment in reinforcing the Syrians’ skills and assisting them in meeting their needs.
It was also recommended that more attention should be paid to the educational sector to save the living generation, and improve the people’s living standards. This way, the victims will be able to make use of their own production skills.
John Strike, Regional Director of Red Cross in Kuwait thanked QC for its humanitarian efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the Syrian people.
He also highlighted efforts exerted by local, regional and international organisations for the benefit of the Syrians. He felt that humanitarian organisations must double efforts and support the Syrian people in any way possible.
Dr Mohammed Walid Mnjed, Regional Director, Syrian Expatriate Medical Association, said the conference is held in a very hard time.
“Winter is about to be here while millions of Syrians are without shelter because of the ongoing crisis,” he said.
