DOHA: The fifth edition of Civil Defence Exhibition and Conference begins today at Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre.
The event will be held under the patronage of Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 3pm until 7pm today and tomorrow and the day after from 9am to 7pm.
The theme of the conference is “Sustainable Development and Disaster Management”.
It will discuss sustainable development and the role of individuals and institutions, future vision of the Arabian peninsula and international and national experiences in disaster management.
At a press conference yesterday, officials of the organising committee said some 97 companies from Qatar, the GCC and rest of the world representing some 1,500 factories and agencies will take part.
The event will cover an area of 15,000 square meters. Showcased will be latest safety and security equipment and firefighting and disaster-management technology.
The press briefing was attended by Brigadier Aman Saad Al Sulaiti, Deputy Director-General, Civil Defence, Abdul Lateef Al Mahmoud, CEO, Dar Al Sharq, and Major Hussain Aman Al Ali, Coordinator of the exhibition-cum-conference.
Staff Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director-General, General Administration, Civil Defence, said the event is being held since 2007 and has been successful in raising awareness about disasters. Al Mahmoud, also Vice-Chairman of the committee, thanked the Ministry of Interior and its Civil Defence Directorate for cooperation and posing their confidence in Dar Al Sharq in organising this key event.
Workshops held as part of the event have gone a long way in creating awareness about how to deal with disasters, he said.
Al Ali said a highlight at the exhibition will be the display of a fire-fighting suit invented by an Independent Secondary School.
The suit has been commercially produced in a European country and a company has placed orders for many. On the sidelines of the expo many agreements are likely to be inked.
