Who doesn’t have a smartphone nowadays? Even people who have ‘not so smart’ phones carry valuable information in them and find the gadget a very private part of their lives. It allows them to keep track of their appointments and, most importantly, keep in touch with loved ones.

However, modern phones offer a long list of services that go far beyond phone calls: Texting, Internet browsing, checking your bank account, shopping, you name it! Cell phones are indispensable for many people and studies show that the average person checks his phone every 15 minutes.

Notwithstanding the debate about whether using smartphones can be addictive, it’s clear that they offer a unique opportunity to companies that want to promote their products, and are also excellent service providers. This is why these days there is a mobile application for almost everything.

Many businesses based in Qatar are taking advantage of this market niche and have developed applications for smartphones that make life easier for users and clients. The remaining task is local development and design of these, given that most of the applications currently in use in Qatar were developed in Dubai, India or Europe.

These are some of the useful apps available to smartphone users in Qatar:

Hukoomi

The mobile app version of Hukoomi allows anyone with a java-enabled smart phone to access government information and services. This mobile app includes shortcuts to pay utilities bills, check and pay for traffic violations, renew health card, read news and events headlines, find useful phone numbers and contacts and other information.

Traffic Qatar

It helps the user find out if he or she has committed any traffic violations in Doha. It’s as easy as entering the vehicle plate number to view if the car has ever been noted by traffic police. Developed by KodeBlink, a software company based in Bangalore, India, it’s available for Iphone and Android.

Cinema Qatar

This application offers a simple service: Check movie timing showing in cinemas all over Qatar. It has information about movie theatre schedules in Villagio, City Center, The Mall, Landmark, Royal Plaza and Gulf/Doha Cinemas. In addition to timings, the user can view the movie ratings, cast, plot, trailer and other information about a movie. It’s developed by Aptrixx and available in Apple Store and Google play.

Qatar Cars

It’s the application that car lovers were waiting for: a forum for Qatar to show their rides and dedicated to motoring passion for cars. Developed by Lignitech, a company which describes its self as a primarily European organization, it’s available for Iphone and Android.

Qatar Airways

This long-waited for application allows passengers to search and book for flights, check flight status and more. Users can also check the latest travel alerts, find all the necessary information for their journey and locate Qatar Airways around the world. Customers can also sign up for special offers and receive up dated information about exclusive fares and packages. The application is developed by Qatar Airways IT.

HSBC Qatar

The HSBC Personal Banking App offers secure and convenient tools to help customers manage their money. It can be downloaded for free and is useful to view account details and transaction history, transfer funds between accounts, pay credit card and utility bills, and send and receive secure messages. The app is only available for Apple devices.

Doha Bank
This application allows bank customers to access their account and credit card details and make instant fund transfers between their own Doha Bank accounts or to any registered Doha Bank beneficiaries. It’s also useful to pay registered QTel and Kahraama Bills, among other services. Doha Bank offers its mobile application for Blackberry, iPhone, Android and Web Enabled Phones (WAP).
Qtel
My Qtel Mobile App offers access to multiple services and features. The user has secure access to their personal details, account and bill information. It allows fast access to topping up Hala services through the eTopUp service and also offers access to the enhanced directory search and listing for Residential, Business and Government contacts.
Doha Offline Map Travel Guide
Available for $4, this app provides information on where to go and what to see in Doha. It’s designed to use offline and it features a list of hotels and points of interest such as banks, ATMs, hospitals, gas stations, restaurants, drug stores and more. It comprises also an image gallery and weather forecast information. Developed by Swan It Technologies.
Doha Film Institute
The official year-round app of the Doha Film Institute (which also offers information about its Doha Tribeca Film Festival) gives all the necessary info for the festival attendees and invites users to engage with DFI via social media integration with Twitter and Facebook. Developed by the Doha Film Institute.
Commercial Bank
Commercial Bank of Qatar gives customers access to their bank accounts and credit cards on their mobile phones. The application also allows users to check balances, transfer funds, pay bills, purchase Qtel Prepaid Services and remit money locally and overseas. Developed by Commercial Bank of Qatar and available for Iphone and Android.
Live TV Qatar
Qatar TV channels can be watched for free now on your mobile phone or tablet with this free Android application. The channels are in different quality and the network speed requirements can be different for each channel. However, the application uses extra two codecs to be installed. It’s developed by Hyper Mobile.

Developing Apps
Most of the apps aimed at Qatar market are made by companies based outside Qatar. Even though penetration of smart phones is pretty high in the country, availability of social apps is limited. In countries like Singapore there is an app for almost everything - finding a restaurant to eat, checking the time of bus service - there are plenty to choose from.
Ammar S Mitoori, cofounder and software architect of Developers & Designers, a young software company based in Qatar, said that most applications used currently in Qatar are developed outside the country in India, Europe or UAE.
“There is almost zero software development in Qatar, even though there would be many advantages, like lower cost, if they do it here,” he added.
This entrepreneur stated that there is a need to improve software services in the health care sector, as well as in human resources departments. From Mitoori’s point of view, small business could easily work using only Iphones and Ipads only.
He added that there is demand for applications in Arabic, but only as another feature, not as a main requirement. Price of making a mobile app ranges from QR50,000 and above.
