The 14th Annual Global Classrooms International High School Model UN Conference (GCIMUN) was held from May 15 to 18 at the UN headquarters and Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York.

Nearly 2,500 high school students from 23 countries took the seats used by UN delegations in the UN General Assembly Hall for the opening ceremony of the United Nations Association of the USA’s Global Classrooms International Model UN Conference.

The conference is designed to engage and empower today’s bright young minds as they develop solutions to difficult problems. Some of the 15 committees and debate topics for this year’s conference include: cyber terrorism, empowerment of rural women and childhood immunization.

The conference was one of the largest Model UN events in the world. In addition to the students, the event involved more than 300 teachers and 120 staff volunteers from 52 colleges and universities.

In Model UN, students role-play as ambassadors from UN member states, interest groups, and non-governmental organisations in a simulation of the United Nations.  Pranav Kaarthik and Sariska Sujaini were honoured for their best position paper in their respective committees, indicating the excellent research work done by them prior to the conference. Shriya Ramakrishnan and Aayush Bharadwaj were awarded honourable mentions in committee sessions for demonstrating their debating skills and in-depth knowledge of their committee. The Peninsula
