Arab ministers discuss plan to launch study on power grid

DOHA: Arab electricity ministers meeting in Cairo have discussed a proposal to launch extensive studies for a proposed power grid in the region and peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The meeting also focused on initiatives proposed by expatriate Arab scientists on energy and its alternatives as well as on a study to set up Arab shareholding companies to manufacture main electrical equipment for power plants in order to achieve self-sufficiency in the Arab world.

The Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada yesterday led a Qatari delegation to the meeting of the Arab Electricity Ministerial Council, which is chaired by Palestine. The meeting, the 10th in a series, was held at the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo.

Essa Hilal Al Kuwari, President of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), on Monday, represented Qatar in the 29th Session of the Executive Bureau, which is chaired by Egypt and counts Qatar, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Iraq, Libya and Oman as members. 

The meeting discussed the progress of the Arab electricity linkage projects and the related study, which is supported by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the World Bank. The meeting also tackled Sudan’s initiative to enhance investment opportunities, mainly for the Egyptian- Sudanese electricity linkage projects and the electricity linkage for the eastern Nile countries (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia).
