Qatar University (QU) and Waseda University, a private and independent research university in Tokyo, signed a research and scientific cooperation agreement, including the establishment of “Chair of the State of Qatar for Islamic Area Studies” at the Japanese university.
The agreement was signed by QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham and Waseda University President Dr Aiji Tanaka.
The agreement is of mutual interest and draws from the two universities common potential through exchange of best expertise, and expertise in supporting research activities in the fields of language, literature, culture, religion, history, politics, economics, international relations and the two countries relationship with aspects related to Islamic civilization.
The agreement will also see the establishment of a co-funded “Chair of the State of Qatar for Islamic Area Studies” Waseda University in Japan, which will see the contribution of faculty members from both institutions with the aim of contributing to enhancing research cooperation between academic institutions and research centers in various aspects of Islamic civilization.
Dr. Hassan Al Derham commented on the agreement saying that over the past two decades, the State of Qatar has worked to promote the language and culture of dialogue among different religions and civilizations, and that the establishment of this chair for the study of Islamic civilization comes to promote the partnership between Qatar and Japan in the cultural and academic aspects.
“We will work hard with the prestigious Waseda University to develop research projects and build human capacity for a greater understanding of Islamic civilization,” he said.
He also stressed that this agreement supports the strong relationship that Qatar shares with Japan and the spirit of friendship and partnership that greatly helps to contribute to the development, knowledge and understanding of the Islamic identity.
